Madaba & Mount Nebo One Day Tour (Depart Dead Sea)
The tour's first stop is Madaba, an ancient town that was mentioned in the Bible at the time of Exodus in about 1200 BC. The city is best known for its spectacular Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics and is home to the famous 6th century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Other mosaic masterpieces can be found in the Church of the Virgin and the Apostles and the Archaeological Museum.
Mt. Nebo is the most sacred site in Jordan. His Holiness the late Pope John Paul II declared it one of the official Millennium 2000 pilgrimage sites. Its first church was built in the late 4th century. Recently, six tombs from different periods were found hollowed out of the rock beneath the mosaic covered floor of the Mosses Church.
The site of John the Baptist's settlement at Bethany Beyond the Jordan, where Jesus was baptised, has long been known from the Bible (John 1:28 and 10:40) and from the Byzantine and medieval texts. The site has now been identified on the east bank of the Jordan River, in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Bethany Beyond the Jordan is located half an hour by car from the Jordanian capital, Amman.
